ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to reshape the abdomen when diet and exercise cannot correct loose skin, persistent lower abdominal fullness, or weakness in the abdominal wall. These concerns commonly develop after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or natural loss of skin elasticity over time

The surgical plan depends on the location and degree of laxity. A full tummy tuck may be appropriate when excess skin is present above and below the belly button with muscle separation, while an extended approach may be considered when laxity also affects the flanks. Liposuction may be used selectively for contour refinement, but skin removal and abdominal wall tightening remain the foundation of the procedure

  • Removes loose, excess abdominal skin
  • Repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles when needed
  • Improves abdominal contour after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Designed for reshaping, not overall weight loss

INDICATIONS

Have excess or loose abdominal skin after pregnancy or notable weight loss.
Have weakness or separation of the abdominal muscles, especially after pregnancy.
Have localized abdominal fullness and skin laxity that do not improve with exercise and lifestyle changes alone.
Have lost skin elasticity in the abdominal area with age or genetic factors.
Are in good general health and maintain a reasonably stable weight.
Have realistic expectations regarding scars, recovery, and gradual improvement

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Pregnancy is planned soon, as it may affect the abdominal muscles, skin, and surgical result.
Weight is unstable or major weight loss is expected soon.
Body weight or BMI is high enough that weight reduction should be addressed first for safety and improved outcomes.
Uncontrolled medical conditions, bleeding disorders, or healing concerns increase surgical and anaesthetic risk.
The patient smokes and cannot follow preoperative cessation requirements.
Expectations assume a scar-free abdomen, treatment for general obesity, or an unrealistic transformation

HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS

[ 05 ]

Assessment and planning

The process begins with evaluation of excess skin, skin quality, fat distribution, abdominal wall strength, and possible muscle separation. The surgeon selects the appropriate tummy tuck approach and plans the incision placement as discreetly as possible within the underwear line.

[ 06 ]

During surgery

  • The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
  • A horizontal incision is made low on the abdomen; a second incision around the belly button may be needed in a full tummy tuck.
  • The skin is elevated from the abdominal wall when muscle repair is required.
  • Separated abdominal muscles are tightened with sutures to improve support and reduce central bulging.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed, and the belly button is repositioned in full procedures.
  • Liposuction may be used selectively to refine contour in appropriate areas.
  • Incisions are closed with fine sutures, and drains may be used for a limited period when needed

After surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness are expected during the first days.
  • A compression garment is worn to support the abdomen during recovery.
  • Sleeping with the upper body elevated and knees slightly bent helps reduce tension on the incision early on.
  • Gentle walking begins gradually, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are avoided until medically cleared.
  • Follow-up visits monitor wound healing, drain management if used, and the development of the abdominal contour

RESULT

A flatter abdominal outline is visible immediately after surgery, but final results take several months as swelling subsides and the tissues settle. Over time, the abdominal contour becomes firmer, smoother, and more balanced with the rest of the body

The aim is a more supported, refined abdomen — not a complete body transformation or a replacement for healthy lifestyle habits. Maintaining a stable weight and avoiding future pregnancy where possible help preserve the result for longer.

  • Progressive improvement in abdominal flatness and contour
  • Better abdominal wall support when muscle separation is repaired
  • Final result develops over several months
  • Stable weight supports long-term maintenance
