Tummy Tuck: what to expect before, during and after the procedure

August 22, 2026

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess abdominal skin and address weakened or separated abdominal muscles, creating a firmer, more balanced abdominal contour.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to reshape the abdomen when diet and exercise cannot correct loose skin, persistent lower abdominal fullness, or weakness in the abdominal wall. These concerns commonly develop after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or natural loss of skin elasticity over time

The surgical plan depends on the location and degree of laxity. A full tummy tuck may be appropriate when excess skin is present above and below the belly button with muscle separation, while an extended approach may be considered when laxity also affects the flanks. Liposuction may be used selectively for contour refinement, but skin removal and abdominal wall tightening remain the foundation of the procedure

  • Removes loose, excess abdominal skin
  • Repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles when needed
  • Improves abdominal contour after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Designed for reshaping, not overall weight loss

After surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness are expected during the first days.
  • A compression garment is worn to support the abdomen during recovery.
  • Sleeping with the upper body elevated and knees slightly bent helps reduce tension on the incision early on.
  • Gentle walking begins gradually, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are avoided until medically cleared.
  • Follow-up visits monitor wound healing, drain management if used, and the development of the abdominal contour
