Gynecomastia surgery is designed to reduce enlarged male tissue and create a flatter, more defined chest contour through treatment tailored to excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin laxity.
Gynecomastia can result from localized chest fat, enlarged glandular tissue, or a combination of both. For this reason, treatment is not automatically limited to liposuction. The surgical plan begins by identifying the cause and degree of enlargement, as well as the quality of the skin and tissue.
The procedure may involve liposuction when fat is the primary factor, direct gland excision through a small incision around the areola when firm glandular tissue is present, or a combination of both techniques. In more advanced cases with excess skin, skin removal and nipple repositioning may be needed to create a balanced chest contour.
The procedure begins with examination of chest shape, fat distribution, glandular tissue, skin elasticity, and symmetry. Medical history, medication use, and possible hormonal factors are also reviewed to determine whether surgery is appropriate and whether liposuction, gland excision, or both are needed.
A flatter chest contour is visible immediately after surgery, but early swelling means this is not the final result. As swelling decreases and tissues settle over the following months, the chest becomes more defined and balanced with the rest of the body.
The goal is a natural, masculine chest contour that suits the patient’s anatomy, not excessive tissue removal. Stable weight and treatment of any contributing hormonal or medication-related cause help reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
