A thigh lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat and tightens loose tissue to improve thigh contour and reduce discomfort from skin friction, particularly after major weight loss or loss of skin elasticity.
A thigh lift, also called thighplasty, addresses loose skin that may develop on the inner or outer thighs after weight loss, with ageing, or due to individual skin characteristics. When there is significant excess skin, liposuction alone is often not enough because the primary concern is skin laxity rather than fat alone.
The procedure is tailored to the location and degree of laxity. It may be limited to the upper inner thigh, extend from the groin area toward the knee, or address the outer thigh. In cases of severe laxity after major weight loss, a more extensive approach may be needed to treat multiple surfaces of the thigh.
The thighs are assessed from the inner, outer, front, and back views to identify the location of laxity and the amount of excess skin. The surgeon selects the appropriate approach — mini, medial/inner, lateral/outer, or more extensive thigh lift — and plans incision placement to be as discreet as possible within natural creases or clothing lines.
Early improvement in thigh contour is visible after surgery, but final results develop over several months as swelling decreases and the skin and tissues settle. The inner or outer thighs become firmer, skin folds decrease, and friction with movement may improve.
The goal is thighs that are more comfortable and proportionate to the body, not an unnaturally thin appearance. Stable weight, scar care, and adherence to recovery guidance support long-term results.
