ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

A thigh lift, also called thighplasty, addresses loose skin that may develop on the inner or outer thighs after weight loss, with ageing, or due to individual skin characteristics. When there is significant excess skin, liposuction alone is often not enough because the primary concern is skin laxity rather than fat alone.

The procedure is tailored to the location and degree of laxity. It may be limited to the upper inner thigh, extend from the groin area toward the knee, or address the outer thigh. In cases of severe laxity after major weight loss, a more extensive approach may be needed to treat multiple surfaces of the thigh.

  • Removes excess skin and laxity from the thighs
  • Improves the inner thigh, outer thigh, or both according to need
  • May reduce friction and discomfort caused by skin folds
  • Technique is selected based on the location and degree of skin laxity

INDICATIONS

Have excess or loose thigh skin, especially after substantial weight loss.
Experience painful friction or recurrent irritation between the thighs because of excess skin.
Have localized fat combined with skin laxity that does not improve adequately with exercise and diet.
Notice reduced skin elasticity in the thighs with ageing.
Find clothing or everyday activity uncomfortable because of loose thigh skin.
Are in good general health and maintain a reasonably stable weight.
Understand that surgery improves thigh contour but leaves scars that mature gradually over time.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Weight is unstable or substantial additional weight loss is expected soon.
Pregnancy is planned soon and may affect weight and body contour.
Skin laxity is very mild and a less extensive option may be suitable after assessment.
Uncontrolled medical conditions, bleeding disorders, or wound-healing concerns increase surgical risk.
The patient smokes and cannot follow preoperative and postoperative cessation requirements.
Expectations do not account for scars, recovery time, or the realistic limits of improvement.

HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS

[ 05 ]

Assessment and planning

The thighs are assessed from the inner, outer, front, and back views to identify the location of laxity and the amount of excess skin. The surgeon selects the appropriate approach — mini, medial/inner, lateral/outer, or more extensive thigh lift — and plans incision placement to be as discreet as possible within natural creases or clothing lines.

During surgery

  • The procedure is generally performed under general anaesthesia.
  • Areas of excess skin are marked precisely before surgery.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed according to the treatment plan.
  • Liposuction may be used in selected areas to improve proportion when skin quality is appropriate.
  • Supportive tissues are tightened to improve thigh contour and distribute tension.
  • Incisions are closed with fine sutures, and drains may be used depending on the extent of surgery.
  • Compression garments are applied to support the thighs during early healing.
[ 07 ]

After surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, and thigh tightness are expected during the first days.
  • Compression garments are worn for the period recommended to support tissues and reduce swelling.
  • Sleeping with pillows supporting the thighs and beginning gentle walking gradually are commonly advised.
  • Long walks, strenuous exercise, and heavy lifting should be avoided during early recovery.
  • Follow-up appointments monitor wound healing, swelling, thigh symmetry, and scar development.

RESULT

Early improvement in thigh contour is visible after surgery, but final results develop over several months as swelling decreases and the skin and tissues settle. The inner or outer thighs become firmer, skin folds decrease, and friction with movement may improve.

The goal is thighs that are more comfortable and proportionate to the body, not an unnaturally thin appearance. Stable weight, scar care, and adherence to recovery guidance support long-term results.

  • Improved firmness and contour of the thighs
  • Reduced skin folds and thigh-to-thigh friction
  • Progressive improvement in shape and scars over time
  • Weight stability supports long-term thigh contour
