What is Back Lift? A patient-friendly guide to the procedure

August 22, 2026

A back lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the back and tightens loose tissue to reduce visible back folds and improve body contour after weight loss or reduced skin elasticity.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

A back lift addresses loose skin and folds that may develop in the upper or lower back, especially after substantial weight loss or natural loss of skin elasticity over time. When the main concern is excess skin, liposuction alone is often not enough because fat removal does not correct skin laxity.

The treatment plan depends on where the laxity is located. Surgery may focus on the upper back along the bra line, the lower back and flanks above the buttocks, or a more extensive area in cases of severe skin excess. The aim is to improve back and waist contour while preserving natural transitions between body areas.

  • Removes loose skin and visible back folds
  • Improves the upper back, lower back, or flank contour
  • Treats skin laxity after weight loss or loss of skin elasticity
  • Technique is selected according to the location and degree of laxity
