Otoplasty (Ear Surgery): what to expect before, during and after the procedure

August 22, 2026

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the shape, size, or position of the ears, particularly for prominent or asymmetrical ears, creating a more balanced and natural relationship with the face.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Otoplasty is not intended to make both ears perfectly identical. Its purpose is to improve balance between them and reduce prominence or refine shape in a way that suits the face. The most common concern is prominent ears, which may result from an underdeveloped natural cartilage fold, a deep conchal bowl, or an increased angle between the ear and head.

The procedure may involve setting prominent ears closer to the head, reshaping cartilage, reducing large ears, correcting asymmetry, or repairing a torn earlobe. The surgical plan is individualized according to cartilage structure, ear shape, and the degree of correction needed.

  • Corrects prominent or asymmetrical ears
  • Reshapes cartilage to improve ear position
  • Uses a discreet incision behind the ear
  • Suitable for children and adults after assessment

After surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, mild discomfort, and a feeling of tightness are expected during the first days.
  • Sleeping with the head elevated and avoiding pressure on the ears are recommended.
  • Non-dissolvable sutures may be removed after approximately one week according to the treatment plan.
  • Return to school or work is often possible within several days, depending on activity level.
  • A nighttime headband may be used for a defined period to protect the ears from friction or bending during sleep.
  • Follow-up appointments monitor healing, ear position, symmetry, and cartilage stability.
