Who may be a suitable candidate for Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?
August 22, 2026
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids to restore a fresher, more youthful appearance to the eyes, while improving vision in select cases.
INDICATIONS
For the upper eyelid:
- Excess skin drooping over the lashes or limiting vision.
- Protruding upper eyelid fat causing a tired or puffy look.
- Mild weakness in the eyelid-lifting muscle (may require additional repair).
- A desire for a more refreshed appearance and reduction of a tired or sad expression.
For the lower eyelid:
- Visible under-eye bags or fat protrusion.
- Dark circles caused by fat shadowing or thin skin.
- Excess or lax skin beneath the eyes.
- Mild laxity in the muscle surrounding the eye.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Blepharoplasty may not be appropriate, or may require further evaluation, when:
- Ocular surface problems or significant dry eye need treatment first.
- Uncontrolled medical conditions affect anaesthesia safety or wound healing.
- Expectations assume a dramatic change in eye shape rather than a natural refinement.
- Noticeable eyelid ptosis is present and requires careful assessment to determine whether additional muscle repair is needed.
- There are visual concerns that require an ophthalmologic evaluation before surgery.
