Who may be a suitable candidate for Upper Body Lift?

August 22, 2026

An upper body lift is a surgical procedure designed to address loose skin in the upper back, sides, and breast area, improving the contour and proportion of the upper body after significant weight loss.

INDICATIONS

An upper body lift may be suitable for patients who:

  • Have loose skin or visible folds across the upper back and sides.
  • Notice prominent skin rolls when wearing bras or fitted clothing.
  • Have lost a large amount of weight and developed laxity or shape changes in the back and breast area.
  • Have breast ptosis combined with loose skin on the back and sides.
  • Experience discomfort in clothing or irritation within skin folds.
  • Have a stable weight and general health suitable for lifting surgery.
  • Understand that the procedure leaves a long horizontal scar that can be planned within the bra or clothing line.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

The procedure may not be appropriate, or may need to be postponed, when:

  • Weight is unstable or substantial additional weight loss is expected.
  • BMI remains high enough that weight reduction should be addressed first for safety and improved outcomes.
  • Pregnancy is planned soon, especially if breast lifting is included in the plan.
  • Skin laxity is mild, and a less extensive approach may be more appropriate after assessment.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions, bleeding disorders, or healing concerns increase surgical risk.
  • The patient smokes and cannot follow cessation requirements before and after surgery.
  • Expectations do not account for the scar, recovery process, and gradual development of results.
