When may Mini Tummy Tuck not be suitable?

August 22, 2026

A mini tummy tuck is a focused surgical procedure designed to improve the lower abdomen below the belly button by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the lower abdominal muscles when needed, without moving the belly button.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

The procedure may not be appropriate, or may need to be postponed, when:

  • There is moderate to severe laxity across the entire abdomen.
  • Loose skin extends above the belly button, as this area is not corrected by a mini tummy tuck.
  • There is significant muscle separation or major abdominal wall weakness requiring a full tummy tuck.
  • Pregnancy is planned soon or major weight changes are expected.
  • Weight is unstable or BMI is high enough that weight reduction should be addressed first.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions, bleeding disorders, or healing concerns increase surgical risk.
  • The patient smokes and cannot follow preoperative cessation requirements.

INDICATIONS

A mini tummy tuck may be suitable for patients who:

  • Have mild to moderate loose skin limited to the area below the belly button.
  • Have a persistent lower abdominal “pooch” that does not improve sufficiently with exercise and diet.
  • Have localized lower abdominal fat or excess skin.
  • Have mild weakness or minor separation of the lower abdominal muscles.
  • Maintain a stable weight close to their appropriate range.
  • Are not planning pregnancy in the near future.
  • Understand that the procedure does not treat loose skin or fullness in the upper abdomen.
