Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to improve chin projection, shape, or position, creating better balance between the chin, jawline, nose, and neck while preserving natural facial character.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

A small or recessed chin can make the jawline appear less defined, the neck less contoured, or the nose proportionally more prominent. Chin augmentation addresses this imbalance by improving chin projection or modifying its position and shape in harmony with the rest of the face.

The approach depends on individual anatomy and goals. A chin implant may be used to increase projection, while sliding genioplasty moves the patient’s own chin bone forward, backward, sideways, or vertically. The choice is based not only on desired size, but also on jaw structure, bite relationship, facial symmetry, and the intended result.

  • Improves chin projection and facial balance
  • Supports a more defined jawline and neck contour
  • Uses either a chin implant or bone movement according to the case
  • Access can be from inside the mouth or beneath the chin in discreet locations

INDICATIONS

Have a small or recessed chin relative to their facial profile.
Feel that their jawline lacks definition because of limited chin projection.
Have chin asymmetry or deviation.
Want to improve facial profile balance, particularly in relation to the nose and neck.
Need a more stable or precise correction than non-surgical options can provide.
Are in good general health and understand that the goal is improved balance rather than a complete change in facial features.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

There is a clear bite problem or jaw relationship issue that may require orthognathic surgery instead of, or in addition to, chin surgery.
Facial and jaw bone growth is not complete.
Uncontrolled medical conditions, bleeding disorders, or healing concerns increase surgical or anaesthetic risk.
There is active infection or inflammation in the mouth, teeth, or chin area.
Expectations assume a complete facial transformation or unrealistic perfect symmetry.

HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS

Assessment and planning

The chin is assessed from the front and side in relation to the nose, lips, jawline, and neck. Bite relationship may also be evaluated when relevant. The surgeon then determines whether the patient is better suited to a chin implant or a bony sliding genioplasty.

Chin implant procedure

  • Surgery is commonly performed under general anaesthesia, though other options may be suitable in selected cases.
  • An incision is made inside the lower lip or beneath the chin.
  • A precise pocket is created over the chin bone.
  • The implant is placed and secured in the planned position.
  • The incision is closed with fine sutures, usually dissolvable when an intraoral approach is used.

Sliding genioplasty

  • The incision is commonly made inside the mouth to avoid a visible external scar.
  • The lower portion of the chin bone is precisely cut below the tooth roots.
  • The bone is moved into the planned position to improve projection, height, or symmetry.
  • The bone is secured with small plates and screws, then the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures.

After surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, and mild-to-moderate discomfort are expected during the first days.
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended to limit swelling.
  • With an intraoral approach, soft foods and prescribed mouth rinses are typically advised.
  • Light work can often resume within days, while sport and hard foods are delayed until medically cleared.
  • Follow-up visits monitor healing, sensation in the chin and lower lip, and stability of the new chin position.

RESULT

Improved chin projection and facial balance are visible soon after surgery, but final results develop gradually as swelling subsides and tissues settle. With sliding genioplasty, bone and soft-tissue healing continue over the following months.

The aim is a proportionate chin that supports the jawline and neck while balancing the facial profile without an exaggerated appearance. Temporary numbness in the chin or lower lip can occur during recovery and usually improves gradually.

  • More projected, balanced chin contour
  • Improved definition of the jawline and neck
  • Progressive refinement as swelling resolves
  • Natural result suited to the patient’s facial proportions
